A CSA Calculator is an independent digital tool that calculates statutory child maintenance payments based on parent income, parenting time, and dependent children. Separated parents use the calculator to establish clear financial maintenance arrangements, prevent parental disputes, and calculate statutory child support without court litigation.

The platform evaluates gross annual income, incorporates 100% allowable pension relief, accounts for other dependent children in the household, and applies overnight shared-care deductions. You can use this Child Maintenance Calculator as a transparent baseline for Direct Pay family agreements or statutory Child Maintenance Service (CMS) assessments.

How Does the CSA Calculator Work?

The calculator works out child maintenance through a structured mathematical framework aligned with statutory family legislation and Department of Justice (DOJ) guidelines. Review the information you need before you begin, so you can calculate maintenance accurately.

£

What Is a CSA Calculator?

A CSA Calculator is an independent digital tool that calculates statutory child maintenance payments based on parent income, parenting time, and dependent children. It translates the Child Support Act 1991, the Child Support Maintenance Calculation Regulations 2012, and the Irish Child Maintenance Guidelines 2025 into an objective financial assessment.

Parents use this Child Maintenance Calculator to determine fair weekly liabilities, verify legal payment bands, and establish transparent financial agreements outside family court proceedings.

£

How Are Child Maintenance Payments Calculated?

Child maintenance payments are calculated using a six-stage statutory formula that converts gross annual income into weekly assessable income and applies percentage rates based on the number of qualifying children and overnight stays.

How the calculator works is straightforward: it starts with total pre-tax earnings, deducts 100% of allowable pension contributions, subtracts household child allowances (11% to 16%), applies rate tiers (Nil, Flat £7, Reduced, Basic 12–19%, Basic Plus 9–15%), and deducts overnight shared-care credits.

£

Is This an Official Government Calculator?

No, this is an independent LegalTech Child Maintenance Calculator designed for estimation, family planning, and amicable parent negotiations, not a formal government portal.

In the UK, official statutory orders are issued by the Child Maintenance Service (CMS). In Ireland, official assessments are governed by the Department of Social Protection and the courts. This tool is completely voluntary, does not store personal data, and calculator results will not change a court order already in force.

Information You Need Before You Use The Calculator

Before you use the calculator, gather the necessary documentation. The calculator will ask you questions across three mandatory financial categories to produce a fair, statutory result:

Requirement 01 Pre-Tax

1. Both parent’s gross annual income

Gross annual income is your total yearly income before income tax and National Insurance (NI) contributions are deducted.

This includes employment earnings (P60 or payslip), self-employed trading profits, dividends, and pensions. It also includes state benefits received from the Department of Social Protection (e.g. Carer’s Allowance, Child Benefit, Disability Allowance, Domiciliary Care Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance, and Jobseeker’s Benefit).

Excluded Payments: One Parent Family Payment and Supplementary Welfare Allowance are strictly excluded from assessable income.

Verify your gross annual income via your latest employer payslip, annual P60, or payment statements on mywelfare.ie. You can also request a payment statement from your local Intreo Centre.

Requirement 02 Overnights

2. How much parenting time each parent provides

Parenting time is the number of overnight stays or qualifying day sessions of longer than 8 hours each parent provides for the child each year.

The calculator will ask how many overnight stays the child spends with each parent. If one parent does not provide overnight care, count how many times per year that parent provides parenting time each parent provides for longer than 8 hours per day.

Statutory Rule (John's Schedule):

John provides parenting time every Saturday for 12 hours. Because 12 hours is longer than 8 hours in one day, it is legally counted as 1 overnight stay per week (52 nights per year).

Providing care two times a week for longer than 8 hours equals 104 nights per year. Three times a week equals 156 nights per year, four times a week equals 208 nights per year, five times a week equals 260 nights per year, and six times a week equals 312 nights per year.

Requirement 03 Household

3. Other dependent children

A dependent child is a child living with you who is under 18 years old, between 18 and 23 years old in full-time education, or of any age with a disability preventing self-support.

Where a paying parent supports other dependent children in their household, the statutory formula deducts an allowance directly from their eligible income before calculating payments:

  • 1 other dependent child: 11% gross deduction
  • 2 other dependent children: 14% gross deduction
  • 3 or more other children: 16% gross deduction

Under the Irish Child Maintenance Guidelines 2025, each parent also receives a standard self-support allowance of €17,998 (£15,380) deducted from gross income before maintenance is calculated.

Statutory Variables

What Factors Affect Your Child Maintenance Payments?

Statutory child support assessments evaluate six core financial and household variables. Each variable directly modifies the weekly maintenance order issued by the CMS or family court.

How Does Income Affect Child Maintenance?

1

Gross annual income determines the statutory rate band applied to your assessment, ranging from Nil rate (£0) up to the statutory cap of £3,000 per week (£156,000 per year).

Weekly earnings under £7 incur £0. Earnings from £7 to £100 incur a Flat rate of £7/week. Income from £100 to £200 falls into the Reduced rate. Earnings from £200 to £800 are taxed at Basic rates (12% to 19%), and income between £800 and £3,000 is assessed under Basic Plus rates (9% to 15%).

How Does the Number of Children Affect Payments?

2

The number of qualifying children increases the percentage of gross weekly income allocated to child maintenance from 12% up to 19% under the Basic rate band.

For 1 child, the rate is 12% on income up to £800 (9% over £800). For 2 children, the rate increases to 16% (12% over £800). For 3 or more children, the rate reaches the statutory ceiling of 19% (15% over £800).

How Do Overnight Stays Affect Child Maintenance?

3

Overnight stays reduce child maintenance payments in statutory tiers once the paying parent cares for the child for at least 52 nights per year.

52 to 103 nights reduces weekly liability by 1/7th. 104 to 155 nights reduces liability by 2/7ths. 156 to 174 nights reduces liability by 3/7ths. Equal shared care of 175+ nights (50/50 care) halves the maintenance order (50% reduction) and deducts an additional £7 per child weekly.

Do Pension Contributions Affect Child Maintenance?

4

Yes, registered pension contributions reduce child maintenance pound-for-pound by deducting 100% of pre-tax contributions from your gross assessable income.

Under Schedule 1, Paragraph 4 of the Child Support Act 1991, workplace auto-enrolment pensions, salary sacrifice arrangements, and personal SIPPs are deducted before rate percentages are applied, providing full statutory tax relief.

How Does Self-Employment Affect Child Maintenance?

5

Self-employed child maintenance is calculated from the taxable trading profits declared to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on your annual Self Assessment tax return.

The CMS obtains trading profit figures directly from HMRC. Legitimate business operating expenses, capital allowances, and pension payments reduce assessable profit. Dividends and retained company earnings can be reviewed through formal variation applications.

Do Benefits Affect Child Maintenance Calculations?

6

Parents receiving income-related state benefits are automatically placed in the Flat rate band (£7.00 per week) or Nil rate band (£0.00 per week).

Universal Credit, State Pension, or income-based ESA set liability to £7/week. Where a paying parent has no income or receives certain non-taxable disability payments, the Nil rate applies. In Ireland, parents on Jobseeker’s Benefit or Disability Allowance are assessed under statutory guidelines.

Explore Different CSA Calculators

Child maintenance situations vary across income types, court orders, self-employment structures, and debt histories. Explore specialized sub-calculators designed for specific legal scenarios.

CSA Payment Calculator

A CSA Payment Calculator computes ongoing statutory weekly and monthly maintenance payments using standard CMS 2012 gross income regulations.

It establishes the baseline Direct Pay transfer amount between separated parents, verifying that payments align with current government rate bands.

CSA Arrears Calculator

A CSA Arrears Calculator determines affordable repayment schedules for accumulated historical child support debt while protecting the paying parent’s minimum legal income.

Under statutory rules, the CMS cannot enforce repayments that reduce net earnings below the 60% Protected Earnings Rate (PER) through a Deduction from Earnings Order (DEO).

Self-Employed CSA Calculator

A Self-Employed CSA Calculator establishes assessable trading income based on net taxable profits submitted to HMRC on the annual SA302 tax overview.

It accounts for business operating costs, capital allowances, and director dividend distributions, ensuring business owners pay accurate maintenance.

Child Maintenance Income Calculator

A Child Maintenance Income Calculator aggregates irregular earnings—such as overtime, quarterly bonuses, commission, and freelance stipends—into a normalized weekly assessable income.

Where income fluctuates by more than 25%, parents can submit updated evidence to the CMS for a formal assessment recalculation.

One Child and Two Children Calculators

One Child and Two Children Calculators apply the exact statutory percentage differentials between supporting a single child (12% Basic, 9% Plus) versus two children (16% Basic, 12% Plus).

These calculators allow parents to model per-child allocations and split shared care nights across multiple siblings fairly.

Overnight Stays Calculator

An Overnight Stays Calculator translates custody schedules—including alternate weekends, school holidays, and mid-week dinners—into annual overnight night totals.

It identifies which statutory reduction threshold applies (52, 104, 156, or 175+ nights) and automatically deducts the correct fraction from the maintenance order.

High Earners Child Maintenance Calculator

A High Earners Child Maintenance Calculator evaluates earnings exceeding the statutory ceiling of £3,000 per week (£156,000 gross per year).

Once the maximum statutory CMS assessment is established, receiving parents can apply to the family court for a top-up order under Section 8 of the Child Support Act 1991. Under Irish guidelines, combined parental income over €288,956 gross requires court adjudication as the calculator is not suitable for high wealth assets.

Child Maintenance Benefits Calculator

A Child Maintenance Benefits Calculator verifies whether welfare payments qualify for the £7.00 Flat rate or the £0.00 Nil rate exemption.

It details how benefits like Universal Credit, Carer’s Allowance, and Disability Allowance are treated, and confirms the statutory exclusion of One Parent Family Payment.

Pension Contributions and Dividends Calculators

Pension Contributions and Dividends Calculators calculate the exact child maintenance reduction achieved by making tax-relieved pension contributions or restructuring director dividends.

Every pound invested into an approved pension reduces gross assessable income, lowering statutory liability while building retirement security.

CSA Calculators for Different UK Regions

While the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) operates a standardized statutory calculation formula, distinct legal statutes, regional age extensions, and court enforcement systems apply across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Child Maintenance Calculator for England

England

In England, child maintenance is governed strictly by the Child Support Act 1991 and the 2012 Child Maintenance Calculation Regulations administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Maintenance obligations continue until the child reaches age 16, or age 20 if remaining in full-time non-advanced education (such as A-Levels or vocational BTEC courses). High earner court top-up orders are adjudicated under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989 in the Family Court.

Child Maintenance Calculator for Scotland

Scotland

In Scotland, distinct family legislation applies under Section 1(1) of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985, extending parental maintenance obligations up to age 25 for adult children in vocational training or university education.

While the CMS handles primary statutory assessments up to age 20, Scottish courts have direct legal power to award aliment directly to students aged 18 to 25. Scottish enforcement uses the Sheriff Court and Summary Warrants rather than English Liability Orders.

Child Maintenance Calculator for Wales

Wales

Child maintenance calculations in Wales operate under the same England and Wales legal jurisdiction, applying identical 2012 CMS gross income statutory rates.

Welsh families have access to bilingual CMS services and Welsh family dispute mediation resources funded under the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 to support Direct Pay parental arrangements.

Child Maintenance Calculator for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland

Child maintenance in Northern Ireland is administered separately by the Child Maintenance Service Northern Ireland (CMS NI) under the Department for Communities (DfC).

Governed by the Child Support (Northern Ireland) Order 1991, the calculation rates mirror the Great Britain scheme (12% to 19%), but legal enforcement is processed through Northern Ireland Magistrates’ Courts with regional collection teams in Belfast.

Cross-Border Maintenance

International Child Maintenance Calculators

Child maintenance enforcement frequently crosses international borders. Cross-border obligations are enforced through international treaties, including the Hague Convention and the Reciprocal Enforcement of Maintenance Orders (REMO).

Australia Child Maintenance Calculator

AUD

In Australia, child support is calculated by Services Australia using an 8-step formula under the Child Support (Assessment) Act 1989.

The formula assesses both parents’ Adjusted Taxable Incomes (ATI), deducts a self-support reserve, and calculates care percentages based on overnight care.

Canada Child Maintenance Calculator

CAD

In Canada, child support is determined by the Federal Child Support Guidelines using province-specific monthly child support lookup tables.

Payments are based on the paying parent’s gross annual income and the number of children, with Section 7 extraordinary expenses split in proportion to incomes.

European Child Maintenance Calculators

EUR

European jurisdictions use specialized statutory scales, such as the Irish Child Maintenance Guidelines 2025 and Germany’s Düsseldorfer Tabelle.

The Irish guidelines deduct a self-support allowance of €17,998 per parent from gross income before calculating eligible income, and enforce maintenance through District Courts.

Asia and Other International Calculators

REMO

Child maintenance across Asian nations, the Middle East, and the Commonwealth is managed through Reciprocal Enforcement of Maintenance Orders (REMO).

Countries with bilateral REMO agreements with the UK—such as Singapore, New Zealand, and Hong Kong—allow British court orders to be registered and enforced directly on local wages.

Understanding Child Maintenance Calculations

Statutory calculations establish binding financial obligations. Learn how statutory formulas are enforced, how wage deductions are executed, and how arrears are legally resolved.

How Is the CSA Calculation Formula Applied?

The statutory CSA calculation formula is applied through six sequential mathematical steps that transition from gross earnings to the final net payment order:

Step 1: Gross Income Verification

Annual gross taxable income retrieved via HMRC RTI.

Step 2: Pension Relief

100% deduction for registered pension contributions.

Step 3: Household Child Credit

11%, 14%, or 16% deducted for resident children.

Step 4: Statutory Rate Banding

Classified into Nil, Flat, Reduced, Basic, or Plus.

Step 5: Qualifying Children Rates

12%, 16%, or 19% applied to assessable income.

Step 6: Shared Care Reduction

1/7th to 3/7th or 50%+£7 off for overnight care.

What Are the Child Maintenance Rates?

Under the 2012 statutory regulations, there are five child maintenance rate bands determined by the paying parent’s gross weekly income:

Statutory Rate Band Gross Weekly Income 1 Child 2 Children 3+ Children
Nil RateUnder £7 / week£0.00£0.00£0.00
Flat Rate£7 to £100 / week (or benefits)£7.00£7.00£7.00
Reduced Rate£100 to £200 / week£7 + 17% excess£7 + 22% excess£7 + 25% excess
Basic Rate£200 to £800 / week12%16%19%
Basic Plus Rate£800 to £3,000 / week9% over £80012% over £80015% over £800

How Are CSA Arrears Calculated?

CSA arrears are calculated by tallying all missed statutory weekly payments from the original assessment effective date and deducting confirmed direct payments made to the receiving parent.

The CMS maintains legal authority to collect arrears accumulated under legacy CSA schemes. Arrears do not accumulate interest under statutory rules, but the government can add substantial collection charges if enforcement actions—such as bailiff visits or court hearings—are initiated.

How Much Can CSA Deduct From Your Wages?

Through a Deduction from Earnings Order (DEO), the Child Maintenance Service can legally deduct up to 40% of your net earnings directly from your employer payslip.

Statutory law enforces a mandatory Protected Earnings Rate (PER): the employer cannot make deductions that leave the employee with less than 60% of their normal net earnings after income tax and National Insurance deductions.

What Is the Difference Between CSA and CMS?

The primary difference is that the Child Support Agency (CSA) assessed net take-home pay under the 1993 and 2003 schemes, whereas the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) assesses gross annual income before tax using automatic HMRC Real-Time Information (RTI) feeds under the 2012 scheme.

Between 2012 and 2018, all existing CSA legacy cases were formally transitioned to the CMS. Although parents still refer to child support as "CSA payments," all official statutory assessments today operate strictly under CMS 2012 regulations.

In the UK, you should pay the official statutory rate calculated under the Child Support Maintenance Calculation Regulations 2012, or an agreed Direct Pay figure based on that assessment.

For a parent earning the UK median salary of £35,000 per year with one child and alternate weekend care (52 nights per year), the statutory payment is approximately £65.77 per week (£285 per month). Review your calculation annually, if your financial circumstances change.

Is the CSA Calculator Accurate?

▼

Yes, the CSA Calculator is accurate to statutory legislation because it replicates the mathematical formulas established by the UK Child Maintenance Service (CMS 2012 scheme).

The accuracy of your estimate depends directly on the figures you input. If your gross annual income, pension deductions, or overnight care nights are entered incorrectly, the calculated estimate will differ from a binding DWP assessment.

Can I Calculate Child Maintenance If I Am Self-Employed?

▼

Yes, you can calculate child maintenance if you are self-employed by entering your total net taxable trading profit declared on your HMRC Self Assessment tax return.

The CMS accesses this figure directly from your SA302 calculation. Allowable business operating expenses and personal pension contributions reduce assessable profits before maintenance percentages are applied.

Does CSA Consider Pension Contributions?

▼

Yes, the statutory formula considers pension contributions by legally deducting 100% of pre-tax contributions from your gross assessable income.

Under Schedule 1, Paragraph 4 of the Child Support Act 1991, workplace salary sacrifice pensions and personal SIPPs are deducted pound-for-pound before calculating maintenance rate percentages.

Do Overnight Stays Reduce Child Maintenance Payments?

▼

Yes, overnight stays reduce child maintenance payments once you provide care for at least 52 nights per year (an average of one night per week).

52 to 103 nights reduces maintenance by one-seventh (1/7th). 104 to 155 nights reduces maintenance by two-sevenths (2/7ths). 156 to 174 nights reduces maintenance by three-sevenths (3/7ths). Equal care of 175 or more nights halves the liability and deducts an additional £7 per child each week.

Can I Calculate Child Maintenance for Multiple Children?

▼

Yes, you can calculate child maintenance for multiple children by selecting the exact number of qualifying children in the calculator.

The Basic rate percentage increases from 12% for one child to 16% for two children, and 19% for three or more children. The total payment is shared across the children, and overnight reductions are applied according to the care provided for each individual child.

Can I Calculate Outstanding CSA Arrears?

▼

Yes, you can calculate outstanding CSA arrears and repayment schedules using the specialized arrears tool.

The arrears tool divides your total debt by your monthly repayment surplus to establish your clearance timeline. It verifies that repayments do not breach the statutory 60% Protected Earnings Rate on your net wage.

Is This the Same as the Official GOV.UK Calculator?

▼

This calculator uses the identical statutory CMS mathematical formula as the official GOV.UK calculator, but provides additional features including pension relief modeling, international comparisons, and Direct Pay fee calculations.

This is an independent platform for family negotiation and legal planning. Official binding determinations must be requested directly through the government Child Maintenance Service portal.

Are Child Maintenance Rules Different Across UK Regions?

▼

Yes, child maintenance rules differ in specific legal areas across UK regions, notably in Scotland where parental maintenance can extend up to age 25 under Scots Law.

In England and Wales, statutory obligations cease at age 20 in secondary education under the Child Support Act 1991. Northern Ireland administers child support independently through the Department for Communities (DfC) under the Child Support (Northern Ireland) Order 1991.
